What is Kolam Art?

Kolam is the Indian traditional art of drawing patterns around dots or a design that is typically drawn on the floor in South India. This art is very similar to that of drawing Mandala patterns. In South India, these patterns are drawn using specialized formulation of rice flour or rice paste and hence these are traditionally in white. Apart from adding aesthetic value to ones homes, Kolam art also signifies happiness and prosperity, bringing in positivity while eliminating negative energies at the same time.

Are the Kolams displayed in the store fully handmade?

Yes! 100% - just like the way they are traditionally drawn in India. These are NOT block-printed or digitally created. Since these are FULLY hand-painted, there could be minor non-uniformity here and there.

Are the Kolam patterns pre-planned?

The smaller patterns are more commonly found patterns that have passed hands for many generations and routinely used by many. However, the larger patterns that I draw are not pre-planned; all that I have in mind is a general idea of how I would want the art to look. These complex patterns are sometimes combinations of many smaller patterns thoughtfully put together. I would expand on the kolam depending on the space I have on the canvas.
